What is ESGI?

The 150th European Study Group with Industry will take place in Bilbao from 21st to 25th October 2019.

ESGIs are internationally recognized as problem-solving forums for knowledge transfer. Starting in Oxford in 1968, industrialists bring a problem to one of these week-long brainstorming workshops that are attended by a group of mathematicians with varied expertise. It is anticipated that by the end of the week a first step towards a solution for the problem has been identified so that a strategy for further work can be devised.

The main objectives are:
• Increase activity in Industrial Mathematics
• Spread awareness of the benefits of Mathematics
• Encourage the interaction between researchers of different areas
• Promote collaborative R&D projects between research groups from the academic sector and companies, addressing problems that can be solved with mathematical models and computational techniques

Further information on the concept of Study Groups is available in the following websites: https://ecmiindmath.org/study-groups/ and http://www.maths-in-industry.org/. There is a list of previous editions in which the industrial challenges and some proceedings are published.

* ESGI 150 will be a satellite event of ICIAM 2019, the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
