The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Tecnalia and the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) have joined forces to promote a Joint Research Lab on Offshore Renewable Energy, which has recently launched its website http://jrl-ore.com/. The main goal of this partnership is to strengthen the research links among the parties in order to take advantage of synergies between them and to reach critical masses in the agreed scientific and technological areas. At the same time, JRL-ORE aims to increase the impact of the research done in this area in the business world and society in general.

The JRL-ORE team works in 8 research areas related to offshore renewable energies. These include the power electronics for the marine environment, the modelling and simulation of the generation of this type of energy and its grid integration, the creation of digital models that optimise the operation and maintenance tasks of the installations and equipment, as well as control strategies for the reduction of costs during energy extraction. They also use computational and numerical methods to study fluid dynamics and its applications in this field, perform techno-economic analysis, carry out field and laboratory tests to select the best materials, components and techniques for generating this type of energy and seek out and design innovative technologies to speed up the placing on the market of devices and components that facilitate this task.

Some of these topics will be covered in the V Marine Energy Conference that will be held in the Bizkaia Aretoa in Bilbao next November 13th. Organized by Euskampus Fundazioa with University Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Tecnalia and BCAM, the conference will gather researchers and experts in the field of Offshore Renewable Energy.
